The American dream

Like no other country in the world the United States are the destination of millions of foreigners who desire to start a new life. Hundreds of thousands of people enter this country every year and make it their new home.

We would like to help you realize your “American Dream.” In principle, there are two “big choices” and two “main qualifications” that enable you to make the dream come true:

The two big choices:

First, you must decide if you want:

-to stay forever and make America your new home, or

-to stay only for a limited time and then return home.

The first choice is embodied in the “Green Card”, the permanent residency permit that allows you to settle in the United States, work here, and remain here. Eventually, it opens the path to citizenship.

The other choice opens a number of different ways to visit the United States for business or pleasure, to work here for a short or a longer term, to study here and take part in training and cultural exchange, or to open a business here . All these different ways are combined in the term “non-immigrant visa.” They all have in common that the permit to stay and/or work in the United States is limited and that the foreigner is expected to return home at some point.

Once you have made your choice, you need to qualify for the path to your new home:

The two main qualifications:

While about everybody is able to obtain a visitor visa to travel in the United States as a tourist, for all other visa you must qualify by being in one of two groups (at this point we exclude refugees and a few other special groups):

-either you have family ties to the United States, having a spouse, parents, children or siblings who are either United States citizens or holders of a “Green Card”

-or you qualify for an “employment based” visa by virtue of your education, your experience, your employment history or your exceptional abilities in the arts, sports, etc. You might enter the U.S. because you have been offered a job, want to pursue a professional career, or to teach, or you want to open a new business or invest into an existing business and by this advance the American economy. We include in this category all students and trainees who come to America to obtain education.

The final step for most immigrants then is to obtain U.S. citizenship.
